This week's Old Testament reading recounts the Israelites and their arduous journey through the barren desert. They are thirsty, hungry and, no doubt, starting to question Moses' leadership. They are, as well, starting to question God. Now, as the story ends, God directs Moses to draw water from a rock. The doubt doesn't end there. There will be a lot more wondering about God as the journey continues. Sometimes, we are all like those ancient wanderers. Life goes wrong. We lose a loved one. A relationship deteriorates. The world seems to be coming apart. And, we begin to doubt. If God is good, why is our life so bad? Theologians debate this question endlessly. We bargain with God. Change my life. Improve my bank account. Give me a cure. But here is the reality: the story is not about us, nor was it about the Israelites. The story is about God. God wants our lives to tell God's story of redemption. That is the Good News. For that we should be grateful. With a grateful heart, Pastor Tom
